The historical novel «Black Сouncil» by Panteleimon Kulish, written in 1845, is one of the most outstanding works of Ukrainian classics. It describes the turbulent events of 1663, when after the death of Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky, the Ukrainian Cossack state was on the verge of collapse.
The plot of the novel revolves around the struggle for the hetman's mace between two contenders: Colonel Yakiv Somko and Acting Hetman Ivan Brukhovetsky. Somko, a representative of the seniority, seeks to preserve the autonomy of Ukraine and the alliance with the Muscovite Tsardom. Brukhovetsky, on the other hand, focusing on the Crimean Khanate, promises the Cossacks the return of their liberties and the abolition of the council's privileges. Personal dramas also unfold against the backdrop of historical events. Somko is in love with Brukhovetsky's daughter, Lesya, and his love becomes a hostage to political struggle.

The novel is also rich in colorful characters. Here are the majestic figures of the hetmans, the cunning старшини, the loyal Cossacks, and the simple peasants. The author skillfully depicts their characters, psychology, and motivations. An important aspect of the novel is also the depiction of Ukrainian life in the 17th century. Kulish describes in detail Cossack customs, clothing, food, and military affairs. This gives the reader an opportunity to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of that time.
