One of the brightest names in the history of Ukrainian literature. He was not only a talented playwright but also an actor, director, and organizer of Ukrainian theater. The writer's real name was Ivan Tobilevych. He chose the pseudonym Karpenko-Karyi to hide his work from tsarist censorship.
He was the founder of Ukrainian realistic dramaturgy. His plays are characterized by sharp social issues, deep psychological insights, and vivid folk characters.
