Written on the Body

A sensual, profound, and unusual novel about love, passion, and painful loss, in which the narrator poses a kind of riddle to the reader, keeping their gender identity undisclosed throughout the entire text.
Memories of the narrator’s past love affairs intertwine in strange and intricate ways with an obsession with the body of the beloved woman — as though every fold of skin, every hollow, and every detail of her physical anatomy becomes a territory to be explored with both tenderness and passion. It is a confessional novel in which stream of consciousness, medical metaphors, and philosophical reflections on love are woven into a peculiar, almost poetic narrative about lost love.

What makes the work especially distinctive is that neither the narrator’s gender nor even their name is ever stated directly — Winterson deliberately plays with the reader’s expectations, making that uncertainty part of the story’s very meaning. As a result, this is not a sentimental “women’s novel,” but a novel about Woman — the one whose body we come to know almost literally down to the millimeter, every hollow, collarbone, shoulder blade, and tiniest physiological detail.
