Published in 1853, Charlotte Brontë's novel «Villette» is considered her most accomplished and profound work, which, in the opinion of critics, surpasses even the famous «Jane Eyre».
The main character, the partly autobiographical Lucy Snowe, flees England and her tragic past to become a teacher at a French boarding school in the fictional town of Villette. There, she unexpectedly encounters her past. The initial pain gives rise to others, and with them, the broken heart that Lucy had tried to ignore for so long. However, despite the hardships and disappointments, Lucy Snowe continues to live, revealing to us one of the most insightful artistic explorations of the female consciousness in English literature.
