Valerian Pidmohylny is considered one of the most prominent Ukrainian writers of the 20th century. In 1930, Pidmohylny was arrested on a fabricated case of the Union for the Liberation of Ukraine (SVU). He was sentenced to 5 years in the camps, which he served in Kazakhstan. In 1937, Pidmohylny was arrested again and sentenced to death. He was executed on November 3, 1937, in the Sandarmokh tract (Karelia, USSR). Only in 1989 was Pidmohylny rehabilitated posthumously. His works began to be published in Ukraine again, and he gained recognition as one of the classics of Ukrainian literature.
