The Sun Is Rising

Valerian Pidmohylny (1901–1937) was a prominent Ukrainian writer and translator, a vivid representative of the «Executed Renaissance» generation, whose life was tragically cut short by the Stalinist regime. His creative path began early: at nineteen, he published his first collection, and at twenty, he debuted with his translation of Anatole France's novel, «Thaïs». It was thanks to Pidmohylny that works by such classics as Balzac, Stendhal, Diderot, Hugo, Voltaire, and Mérimée became available in Ukrainian.
As an author, Valerian Pidmohylny established himself as a master of profound psychological depth and intellectualism. He subtly depicted the problems of the city and the countryside, and the individual versus their circumstances. These traits, despite the diversity of his plots, are characteristic of all his works. You can enjoy his refined language, depth of imagery, and unique authorial style in this collection, which includes works such as «The Sun Rises», «A Difficult Question», «Haidamaka», «Ostap Shaptala», «The Military Pilot», «The Story of Mrs. Yevha», «Death», and «A Story Without a Title..."». The latter, an unfinished work, is considered a unique example of an intellectual and psychological novel in 20th-century Ukrainian literature.
