The book «The Princess» brings together Taras Shevchenko's first three novellas, written during his period of exile. These prose works, based on the ideological foundations of his poems, are eloquent testimony to the Kobzar's deep pain and suffering, but at the same time, his unbreakable faith in the power of the human spirit and truth. Viewing Shevchenko's work through the prism of his prose reveals unexpected, and sometimes even more timeless, aspects of his legacy to readers.
The novella «The Princess» is a deep exploration of Ukrainian society during the author's time, combining biographical elements with a portrayal of complex social realities and ethical choices. The plot centers on the story of the decline of a landowning family and the tragic fate of Princess Katrusia. The author uses this narrative to show how the immorality and heartlessness of the upper classes lead to the misfortunes of ordinary people.
In addition to acute social themes, Shevchenko's prose is distinguished by a rather modern writing style with sometimes unexpectedly fresh comparisons. This might surprise contemporary readers accustomed to the "bronze" image of the Kobzar.
In the novella «The Maidservant» Shevchenko addresses the tragic yet sublime theme of a mother's fate. The central figure is a woman forced to conceal her motherhood due to societal prejudices. She becomes a symbol of moral resilience and nobility, enduring incredible trials. Although the Maidservant becomes a victim of the merciless opinion of her surroundings, her story is not only an account of suffering but also of love, devotion, and unwavering hope for a better future.
In turn, in the novella «The Convict» Shevchenko explores the theme of social injustice and human honor through the prism of the protagonist's personal experiences. The action unfolds in the harsh reality faced by a former convict. He is forced to fight for survival in a society that does not forgive mistakes. The image of the protagonist, Kyrylo, is a symbol of disenfranchisement and despair that permeates the fates of many characters in the writer's work. Kyrylo is surrounded by poverty and hardship; he sees a world full of torment and struggles with external circumstances, trying to find his purpose. The question of whether he is driven by revenge finds its answer and the revelation of moral dilemmas in the novella «The Princess».
