«A myth is something that never happened and always is». This anthology by Mykhailo Nazarenko invites readers to look into the world of Ukrainian folklore through the eyes of people for whom an encounter with a chort (devil), a khovanets (house spirit), a treasure-shifting monster, or a Kupala serpent (better known as a turtle) was an everyday occurrence. Over five hundred short texts from a hundred sources published between 1853 and 2022 introduce readers to the many characters of Ukrainian demonology. These creatures might still be living in the lands from Zakarpattia to Slobozhanshchyna and from Polissia to Khersonshchyna.
