The Immigrant Woman

A contemporary and deeply moving novel about living between two countries, carrying guilt, losing one’s home, and trying to find oneself in an unfamiliar world. At the heart of the story is Ivanka, a young Ukrainian woman who, after the Revolution of Dignity, moves to Helsinki and learns to exist between her Ukrainian past and Finnish reality, between unspoken trauma and the hope of starting over. It is an honest, tender, and emotionally rich book about emigration, the life-changing power of temporary decisions, the trial of loneliness, and the strength of love that helps a person endure even far from home. The novel is also the author’s debut; having lived in Finland for many years herself, she turned to the subject of the Ukrainian migrant experience long before it became so widespread and painfully familiar to millions.
