The Forest Song

This book offers a unique cross-section of the work of Ukraine’s greatest playwright. It takes readers from the mythic mists of the Volyn forests in The Forest Song to the harsh realities of political exile in The Noblewoman, and the intellectual salons of The Blue Rose. Each play is a profound exploration of the human soul, its freedom, and its longing for light.
In The Forest Song, readers enter the eternal conflict between a lofty spirit and everyday life, embodied in the tragic love of Mavka and Lukash. The Noblewoman reveals a painful chapter of history: the drama of a woman trapped in the “golden cage” of an alien culture, deprived of her home and freedom. Meanwhile, The Blue Rose, Ukraine’s first modernist drama, offers a bold exploration of female identity and freedom of choice. These are works of global stature, rich in mythological codes and philosophical subtexts, placing Lesya Ukrainka alongside Europe’s most distinguished intellectuals.
