Yurii Shevelov is one of the most prominent figures in the history of Ukrainian intellectual thought. His life was full of trials and changes: a childhood and youth in Kharkiv, enduring the German occupation, camps in post-war Germany, and later teaching at prestigious universities like Harvard and Columbia. This edition has a special focus: to present a version of Shevelov who is extremely relevant to us, right here and now. The texts in the book are arranged in chronological order, covering a fifty-year panorama — from 1943 to 1997. These are smart, sharp, uncompromising, and original texts, written with a single agenda that is both clear and painfully familiar to us. A key feature of the edition is that all the original texts are formatted according to the 1928 "Kharkiv" orthography, which adds authenticity and depth to the perception of his legacy.
