Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky is one of the most prominent Ukrainian modernists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a writer who worked masterfully at the intersection of realism and impressionism. His prose resembles refined artistic sketches — watercolors, studies, and etudes — in which words function almost like a painter’s brush. Reading Kotsiubynsky, one feels not merely as though following events, but as though contemplating a sequence of images in which every detail matters, every stroke conveys emotion, and the entire composition impresses with its precision and harmony. The author does not simply recount events; he filters them through the consciousness of his characters, creating a distinctive world of sensations in which sounds acquire color and hues seem to resonate almost physically. It is precisely because of this depth, sensitivity, and artistic perfection that his works continue to resonate with readers of different generations today.

This collection includes the writer’s most famous prose works: Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, At a High Price, What Is Written in the Book of Life, On the Stone, Intermezzo, Apple Blossom, and Dream. Each of them is an important part of Ukraine’s literary heritage and represents some of the finest achievements of the author in its respective genre.
