The protagonist arrives at a remote Australian monastery for only a few days — to rest from the bustle of life and sink into silence — but ultimately remains there for an indefinite stay. Before long, the calm is shattered by disturbing news: the body of a volunteer nun is returned to the monastery, a woman who once lived there before leaving for Bangkok, where she died under mysterious circumstances. Along with her remains comes an eco-activist — the very woman the protagonist herself had bullied during their school years — and this encounter forces her to confront her own past. At the same time, global warming brings a full-blown mouse plague upon the country, and the stench of their bodies seeps through the walls of what was once a peaceful monastery. Surrounded by nature and the conflicted atmosphere of female sisterhood, the protagonist sinks deeper into her own memories, keeping a diary in which she honestly records life as it is — with all its flaws, injustices, and bitter truths.
