Steshka, a young girl from the 17th century, lives a secluded life in the Kyiv home of her engineer father. Her world is suddenly shattered when her father disappears without a trace, rumored to have been kidnapped by the king's men herself. The urge to find and free her father pushes Steshka on a dangerous and exciting journey through the Ukrainian lands of the Baroque era. Joining a band of traveling skomorokhs (minstrel-jesters), she finds not only shelter but also the opportunity to see the world from a new perspective.
From majestic cities to impregnable fortresses, from commoners to noble lords, Steshka witnesses the colorful and dynamic life of Ukrainian society. She experiences the joys and challenges of a wandering life, makes new friends, and learns to accept people for who they are.
The search for her father turns into a search for herself. Steshka discovers new facets of her personality, becoming stronger and wiser. With each step, she gets closer not only to solving the mystery of her father's disappearance but also to understanding the meaning of life.
