Salammbô

«Salammbô» is a grandiose, fantastical recreation of ancient Carthage, crafted by the genius of Gustave Flaubert. This historical epic, set shortly after the First Punic War, masterfully combines politics and religious mysteries. Hordes of unruly mercenaries, deceived and deprived of their promised pay, ignite a bloody rebellion. Amid this darkness, Salammbô, the high priestess of the goddess Tanit and daughter of the general Hamilcar, meets the audacious rebel leader Mâtho for the first time.
This book is an immersion into a world of gratuitously brutal and ruthless war, mysterious religious cults, and a savage morality that might seem like its complete absence. It explores passion and the first stirrings of physical sensuality, but most importantly, it is a story of mystical love. Could it be anything else in such a world?
The book is presented in a translation by Dmytro Palamarchuk and is complemented by black-and-white illustrations by the modern Ukrainian artist Mariia Khymynets.
