A tense documentary-style story about persecution, life in exile, and the inevitable confrontation between victim and killer. At the center of the book are the final years of Stepan Bandera, who lives under an assumed name while constantly remaining under the watch of the Soviet secret services.
It is 1957. In Soviet-controlled East Germany, KGB agent Bohdan Stashynsky receives a new weapon, one he has never seen before, for a special assignment. At the same time, in Munich, journalist Stefan Popel, an émigré from Lviv, leads an outwardly ordinary life, talks with his daughter, and answers her questions about the war, Ukraine, the past, and the figure of Stepan Bandera. But behind that name lies a truth the little girl does not yet know: her father is Bandera himself, one of the Soviet system’s principal enemies. Despite the danger, he ignores warnings, refuses protection, and relies only on himself. His story ends tragically — on a staircase, where he comes face to face with his killer.
