Memphis

Ten-year-old Joan, with her mother and younger sister, seeks refuge in Memphis, fleeing another of her father's outbursts of anger. In the old family house built by her grandfather — the city's first Black detective — the girl tries to find peace through drawing and to overcome a terrible trauma she experienced there at the age of three.
The narrative immerses us in the story of three generations of women in the North family, transforming into a touching family saga. It spans decades, from 1937 to 2003, touching on significant historical events such as the great flood of 1937, the civil rights movement of the 1960s, and the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in the U.S.
