Love Classics

Love Classics is an anthology of Ukrainian classical and modernist prose devoted to love in its many different forms. The volume brings together romantic, psychological, modernist, and erotic texts written between the nineteenth century and the 1920s. It includes twenty-four works by twenty-two authors, ranging from the touching Marusia to the refined Maria of Joy. The book’s design also deserves special mention: a decorated fore edge, full-color interior illustrations, and scented varnishing that gives the edition a distinctive charm.

This anthology tells the story of love in all its fullness — tender and passionate, self-sacrificing and selfish, luminous and painful. The collected texts explore not only romantic feeling, but also erotic desire, friendship, care, responsibility, play, obsession, and loss. The Ukrainian love prose gathered in this collection is striking for its psychological depth, philosophical reflection on emotion, variety of styles, and richness of emotional nuance. It is a book that reveals familiar classics from a new angle — vivid, sensual, and remarkably modern.
