From the words of Mykhailo Hrushevsky about the Kyiv-Pechersk Patericon:
«Of all our ancient written literature, no other work has remained in such constant memory, use, and readership — not only monastic but also secular — as the Kyiv-Pechersk Patericon. We can complain about our old intelligentsia, our literature, and our culture that they did not put into the hands of our citizenry a work more useful from a social and intellectual point of view than this echo of late-Byzantine 'monachomania.' But the fact remains a fact: until the publication of «The Kobzar» this was the most popular work of our old literature».
