Kholodnyi Yar

«When I fall, <...> my native land will drink my blood to grow grass with it for the horse of the one who will take my place».
In the early 20th century in the Cherkasy region, a powerful uprising erupted, which quickly transformed into the legendary Kholodnyi Yar Republic. Peasants and descendants of Cossacks united to keep both the Bolsheviks and Denikin's forces off their land. Their armed resistance was so effective that entire, well-armed divisions, formed from local residents, fought against the invaders. A participant in these events was Yurii Horlis-Horskyi, who masterfully described them in his novel «Kholodnyi Yar».
The author depicts not only brutal armed clashes with the Reds and the desperate underground work of Ukrainian rebels but also the horrific dungeons of the Cheka and the cunning subversive activities against the Soviet regime. The book also reveals the daily life of the warriors, their unbreakable courage, patriotism, complex relationships, adventures, humor, and uncompromising fight to the last breath.
