I (Romance)

A psychological novella about the tragic fracture of the human soul, in which revolutionary ideals collide with humanity, conscience, and love. At the center of the work is a Chekist serving the “black tribunal of the commune,” who finds himself facing a choice that destroys everything human within him. The events unfold against the backdrop of war, in a world of fear, violence, and blind faith in the revolution, where the protagonist is torn in anguish between duty and his own heart. Khvylovy shows how the dream of the “distant commune” and a radiant future can turn into a moral catastrophe when the path toward it is paved with crime. It is a deeply emotional and напряжений work in which the true focus lies not in outward action, but in the inner drama of a person losing himself under the pressure of a fanatical idea.
