One of the most striking novels of our time, this book reveals to the world the dramatic fate of Africa. At the heart of the story is the struggle for the independence of Biafra, a young state in southeastern Nigeria in the late 1960s, whose flag with its golden sun became a symbol of hope for a brighter future.
Through the whirlwind of war, the author follows five utterly different characters whose lives become inseparably intertwined: Ugwu, a curious village boy who witnesses great upheavals; Odenigbo, a passionate intellectual and professor consumed by revolutionary ideals; Richard, a British expatriate trying to find his place in someone else’s struggle; and Olanna and Kainene, twin sisters from a privileged family whose relationship is tested by betrayal and shared grief.
It is a many-layered story about how war tests love, faith, and moral principles. The author masterfully explores themes of ethnic identity, class barriers, and the decline of colonialism. The characters endure betrayal, political conflict, and the horrors of bombardment, losing those closest to them yet never abandoning hope for victory.
