Penellaphe Balfour, known as Poppy, is the “Chosen One,” whose life belongs not to her, but to the gods. As the Maiden, she is the key to the kingdom’s future, and so her days pass in a gilded cage under strict watch. But behind her mask of obedience hides a rebel: Poppy secretly trains with weapons and slips out of the palace, craving even a taste of real life.
One such escape leads to a fateful encounter in the dim light of a tavern. A striking stranger, mistaking her for someone else, gives her an experience the Maiden would never have dared to dream of. Yet the true shock awaits her at home, when the same young man appears at the castle as her new personal guard. Now he is her shadow, her protector — and at the same time her greatest temptation, one that will force Poppy to question everything: her faith, her duty, and even the very nature of evil.
