This moving novel tells the story of a family through the eyes of a witty poodle named Dom. He invites us into the world of an old colonel and several generations of women who feel awkward in a small Lviv apartment. Who lived here before? The stones won't tell. Or maybe they will — if you have a dog's intuition. But are there stories that can help the colonel from eastern Ukraine, or at least his dog, finally feel at home in 1990s Lviv.
It seems you can never find the key to a stranger's chest. You can never let go of the fighter jet's control stick. It feels as though neither the dog nor the walls will ever accept new owners. But sometimes, a stranger's secret turns out to be your own as well. And maybe the heroes of this story will still manage to find a true home — a place where memory and the present intertwine, offering a sense of belonging.
Viktoriia Amelina was a writer, public figure, volunteer, and the founder of the New York Literary Festival, whose life was tragically cut short by a Russian missile strike on Kramatorsk. This book is a testament to her talent and sensitivity to human fates, especially those who seek their place in the world after loss.
