This novel takes the reader on a journey through the 1990s and 2000s. Against the backdrop of the main story, flashbacks unfold, introducing us to the lives of the protagonists' ancestors. These narratives are steeped in pain and suffering, as they endured the brutality of the Soviet regime: deportations, executions, imprisonment, and loss of property. Life under Ukrainian independence was also not easy for Crimeans, especially Crimean Tatars. They had to fight for their rights and defend their identity. The author of the novel has thoroughly researched the history of Crimea and studied numerous sources and personal testimonies of Crimean Tatars to accurately portray their culture, traditions, and way of life.
An important feature of the work is its didactic orientation. The author strives not only to tell the story of the heroine's life but also to share her thoughts on identity, patriotism, and the impact of historical events on human destiny. Particularly intriguing is the transformation of the heroine, who changes from a person with an innate Russian identity to a staunch anti-Russian. This happens not under the influence of propaganda, but through the development of critical thinking, openness to new knowledge, and the influence of Crimean Tatar culture.
The work prompts reflection on questions of identity, choice, and the value of freedom, and it also offers hope that even in the most difficult circumstances, a person can find their path and defend their convictions.
