«The Missing Charter» is one of the most famous stories by Nikolai Gogol. It combines elements of Ukrainian folklore, fairy tale, and satire. This edition is illustrated with atmospheric drawings by the Kyiv artist Andriy Poturaylo, who perfectly captures the spirit of this short story.

The story tells the adventures of Foma Grigorovich, who travels to St. Petersburg with an important charter from the hetman. Along the way, he meets a cunning Zaporozhian Cossack with whom he trades hats. In the morning, the grandfather wakes up in horror to discover that instead of the charter, a pig's tail lies in his hat. Foma Grigorovich sets out in search of the Zaporozhian to return the charter. His journey is full of funny and dangerous adventures, as he meets on his way the devil, witches, mermaids, and other fantastic creatures. In the end, he manages to find and return the charter to the hetman.
