Hryhoriy Kvitka-Osnovyanenko was a Ukrainian writer, playwright, journalist, literary critic, and public figure, known as the «father of Ukrainian prose».
The novella «The Konotop Witch» tells the story of a young, intelligent, and well-known girl Olena, who refuses the courtship of the Cossack centurion Mykyta, because her heart belongs to another young man. But Mykyta Zabroha does not give up, but turns for help to Yavdokha Zubykha, the Konotop witch, who is supposed to bewitch Olena. But witches ... that's what they are for, they do as they please, not as they are asked. The novella, full of humor, satire and fantastic elements, gives the reader the opportunity to look into another era, to feel the spirit of their ancestors.
