«The House on the Hill» is a novel-ballad written by Ukrainian poet-sixties Valeriy Shevchuk. The novel consists of two parts: a novella-preamble and the cycle «The Voice of the Grass» with thirteen novellas. In the work, real life situations are intertwined with demonic images of seducers, the mythological regularity of the fate of women, and biblical motifs about the prodigal son.
Men fly like gray birds to the house near the Teteriv River, seduce women and run away, later sons are born who have creative abilities, or there are those who drink water from the mountain and stay there, then daughters are born. This is a complex and multifaceted novel that makes the reader think about the eternal questions of being, the author seeks to show the knowledge of a person's essence and the search for a life path through their own feelings and intuition, to depict the strength and contradiction of human love.
