The Forest Song. Selected

In the enchanted forest, where forest nymphs slumber and a seductive spirit dances, the beautiful forest spirit Mavka awakens. Her heart trembles at the sound of the flute played by the young Lukas. Despite the belief that forest spirits cannot love, Mavka gives her heart to a mortal. Her love is so pure and strong that no human love could compare. This story became the basis for Lesya Ukrainka’s famous fairy play, «The Forest Song». This poignant tale of love and loss is just one of many masterpieces by Ukrainka, whose works also include the dramatic poems «The Possessed», «Cassandra», «The Boyarynya» and «Orgy».
