The main character is eight-year-old Helenka, a lonely child with a rich imagination, who learns to survive in a cruel and brutal world, trying not to lose herself. Her father emigrated to the USA, and her mother , a theater actress, became a victim of " incitement by hostile socialist elements " . The book describes how ideological control and corruption seep into schools and families, poisoning relationships and distorting human destinies. The life of the main character Gelenka is tightly intertwined with these tragic realities of the adult world, which the girl tries to understand in her own way. The book tells a story that sometimes makes you laugh to the point of tears, and sometimes moves you to tears.
