Iryna Vilde's trilogy explores the complex journey of a girl's coming of age at the beginning of the 20th century. She faces strict demands, double standards of the society of that time and psychological trauma even in her own home.
The 13-year-old protagonist feels like a pinned butterfly, an exhibit in a collection that is admired but not respected as a person. Her life revolves around pleasing and entertaining others. School and society only increase the feeling of suffocation and lack of freedom. However, World War I becomes a catalyst for change. The new generation, to which the main character belongs, is no longer ready to put up with patriarchal norms and colonial oppression. The heroine's conscious choice to refuse marriage and active participation in the Ukrainian movement in Bukovina testify to her growth not only as a person, but also as a citizen.
