«The Forest Song» is a drama-fantasy by Lesya Ukrainka, written in 1911 in Kutaisi, Georgia, and first staged professionally on November 22, 1918 at the State Drama Theater in Kyiv, Ukraine.
The play tells the story of the love between a forest sprite named Mavka and a peasant boy named Lukash. Mavka is a symbol of nature, its beauty and strength. Lukash is a symbol of man who strives for harmony with nature.
The tragedy of Mavka and Lukash is the tragedy of a man who betrays his soul. Mavka is the soul of Lukash, without which he loses the meaning of life. He becomes empty and lonely.
The drama-fantasy «The Forest Song» is one of Lesya Ukrainka's most famous works.
