He was one of the most influential Ukrainian historians of the 19th century, who made a significant contribution to the development of Ukrainian historical science. After graduating from Kyiv University, he devoted his entire life to scientific and public activities. Antonovych was not only a historian but also an archaeologist, ethnographer, archivist, and active public figure. Antonovych founded the Kyiv Historical School. One of the most important areas of his research was devoted to the history of the Cossacks. Antonovych was actively involved in archaeological excavations, particularly in the Kyiv region. He was also an active participant in the Ukrainian national movement. He took part in the creation and activities of various Ukrainian public organizations.
