A significant figure in 19th-century Ukrainian literature, often referred to as the father of the Ukrainian historical novel. Olesya Storozhenko was born in Chernihiv region. He served in the army, participated in the Caucasian War, and after retiring devoted himself to literary creation. His works cover a wide range of genres: from historical novels to ethnographic essays. He gained the greatest popularity for his historical novels, in which he depicted the life of Cossacks, the events of Cossack uprisings, and other important moments in Ukrainian history. He popularized the ideas of the Ukrainian Cossacks and contributed to the formation of Ukrainian national identity. His works became an important source of knowledge about Ukrainian history for many generations of readers.
